Mike Bowler boosts leading barbershop team in Derby

Renowned Derby barber, Mike Bowler, has joined the team at the region’s leading barbershop, The Dandy Gent, ahead of its second shop opening in the award-winning Cathedral Quarter of Derby city centre.

Mike has been cutting gents’ hair in Derby for 12 years, following his apprenticeship at the age of 17 years-old.

“You could say I fell into barbering after school, when an apprenticeship came up at the Derby salon, Kieran Mullin.” Explains Mike. “I quickly picked up the skills and techniques – I guess this was because I really enjoyed it.”

Mike took on an advanced apprenticeship and, a few years into his 12 years of continued learning at the chair, Mike became a trainer and assessor himself.

Family man, Mike joins The Dandy Gent following a couple of meetings with owner, founder and Master Barber, Shane O’Shaughnessy, and is looking forward to helping to launch its second shop on Irongate in Derby.

“I’ve loved working at Kieran Mullin, but it’s time for me to take on a fresh challenge.  The Dandy Gent has a reputation for pushing boundaries and is really going places – I’m looking forward to getting to know the team better and growing in stature with them all.”

Mike will be working alongside Shane and is keen to continue learning from the Master. “I have vast experience, and have lots of customers who will go nowhere else,” Continues Mike. “but we can all keep learning, and I’m sure Shane will have a few tricks and techniques up his sleeve to pass on.”

First on the learning agenda for Mike, will be the art of the traditional wet shave, a speciality at The Dandy Gent.

“I’m delighted to welcome Mike to the team.” Says Shane. “He’s a great team fit, and an exceptional standard of barber.”

29 year-old Mike will be one of an initial team of three at the Irongate branch of The Dandy Gent, working alongside Shane and recently appointed Junior Barber, Lauren Pell.

The Dandy Gent’s original Nuns Street branch continues to serve its vast amount of clients on the outskirts of Derby, with Senior barber, Craig and Junior Barbers; Charlie and Shaun at the chairs-whilst Shane’s wife, Sherri has taken over the management of The Dandy Gent’s manufactory, producing its range of 17 traditional male grooming products.
